ATC Hello Fall!
What's New
Rockdale-West Middleton

Fitchburg-Verona

Ellinwood-Sunset

What’s new in our transmission portfolio?

More than 600 people turned out to view the route alternatives that will be submitted for the Rockdale-West Middleton 345-kV line when the project application is filed with the Public Service Commission later this fall.  Four open houses were held in Dane County in August to present options for the line that is needed to meet increased local demand on the ATC system.

The PSC will hold a public hearing on the Fitchburg-Verona line – a proposed, six-mile 138-kV connection between substations

in the two municipalities. Demand for electricity in southern Dane County is growing at about 6 percent annually – more than twice the state average.  Hearings will be in the Fitchburg City Hall at 3 and 7 pm on Sept. 24.

The Ellinwood-Sunset line remained energized while workers climbed poles, dismantled the existing 500-lb. arms, lowered them to a waiting pontoon boat, then raised and placed new arms on the single-pole structures. The crews were working about 80 or 90 feet in the air while traffic sped by on busy Highway 41.

Work continues along US Highway 41 in Oshkosh to upgrade the Ellinwood-Sunset line, which is the only 138-kV connection between the north and south sides of the city, and a key link in the network between Fond du Lac and Appleton. In mid-August, crews replaced cross arms on seven structures in Lake Buttes des Morts using pontoons that shuttled two work crews to the job site.

Right-of-way is being cleared and poles are going up on the western end of the Gardner Park-Central Wisconsin project near Wausau. Crews will begin construction on the line this fall in about a 20-mile stretch from the Kronenwetter and Weston areas to Caroline, in Shawano County. The 345-kV line is needed to accommodate new generation Weston 4 power plant being built by Wisconsin Public Service in Wausau.  Web site for Weston 4:  http://www.wisconsinpublicservice.com/news/weston4.asp

Congratulations to employees, contractors

ATC employees achieved a significant safety milestone in August – more than 1 million work hours without an OSHA-recordable injury.  That marks more than a year’s worth of work – in the field, as well as office settings – without an accident that the Office of Safety and Health Administration deems “recordable.”

In 2004, 3.4 percent of electricity consumed in Wisconsin was generated using renewable resources such as hydro, wind, biomass, photovoltaic and other sources. Renewable generators, particularly wind turbines, require site-specific resources that are often in remote locations. Bringing electricity from renewable generators to communities requires transmission line connections. Wisconsin utilities are required to increase the portion of electricity generated by renewable resources to 10 percent of electricity consumed by 2015. A stronger transmission grid will help meet renewable energy requirements by bringing power generated by renewable resources into communities.
