 Project Updates

ATC and Rock Energy Cooperative hosted an open house in Milton, Wis. on Aug. 26 to share potential route options for a new 69-kilovolt line planned to connect a new REC substation to the transmission grid that serves the area. Approximately 50 local officials and citizens attended and learned about the routing process and route options being explored. ATC and REC will host a second open house mid-September to discuss narrowed-down route options.

While most of us were fast asleep the night of Tuesday, Sept. 1, crews on the Jefferson County Reliability Project were winding up construction on the new 17-mile, 138-kV line. The last step involved crossing Interstate 94 near Lake Mills, Wis.

Road crossings are usually done at night in the middle of the week for safety reasons and to minimize traffic disturbances. State Troopers assist with traffic control. Crews worked from midnight until around 2 a.m. to bring the wires across the interstate to connect with the already-constructed line on the other side.

A wicked summer storm with winds approaching 90 mph tore down approximately a half mile of a transmission line along County Highway H in Grant County, Wis., Friday, July 24. The storm cut off the transmission feed to the Kieler Substation when it blew down 14 structures that support a 69-kV transmission line and an Alliant Energy distribution line. Alliant and ATC contractors’ quick response, hard work and cooperation had the line back in service by the end of the weekend.

We recently energized 25 miles of an upgraded segment of the Conover-Plains project between Iron River, Mich., and Florence, Wis.  Work began in February and was completed without injury. The new Aspen Substation in Florence also was placed in service as part of this project

Remember that ice road we used for construction in Vilas County last winter?  Creating a frozen road is an effective alternative to using construction mats in wetlands.  Team members recently flew over the Elvoy bog where the work was performed. (See below)

We are participating in several planning studies, partnering with utilities and other generators in the region to identify the transmission infrastructure needed to support new sources of renewable energy. The SMARTransmission Study is a collaboration with American Electric Power, MidAmerican Energy Co., Exelon and NorthWestern Energy Corp. to identify extra-high voltage projects that might be needed to move wind power within a nine-state region from the Dakotas to Ohio. The Eastern Interconnection Planning Collaborative is a group of planning authorities working with the Department of Energy to develop conceptual, region-wide transmission plans within the Interconnection. The Upper Midwest Transmission Development Initiative is an effort by the governors of North and South Dakota, Minnesota, Wisconsin and Iowa to develop a transmission plan and cost-sharing methodology for renewable energy.  Finally, the Midwest Independent System Operator is leading an effort to identify regionally coordinated transmission projects that interconnect and deliver new wind generation based on renewable portfolio standards in Illinois, Iowa, Minnesota and Wisconsin.

ATC in the Community

We once again helped sponsor the Bike4BGC (Bike for Boys & Girls Club of Dane County) in July. Nine bikers from our Madison office formed a team to participate in the ride, which raises funds to support programming for youth in Dane County.

This Wausau Little League Team qualified for the state tournament this summer, but needed some financial assistance. We, along with other area businesses, help make the trip to the Racine area for the big event.
