To improve capacity and relieve overloading on nearby lines, ATC completed improvements on an existing transmission line in southern Rock County and northern Illinois. The electric system in south central Wisconsin is connected to the north central Commonwealth Edison system by a single high-voltage transmission line called the Wempleton-Paddock line. This 15-mile line connects the greater Rockford area to the greater Janesville/Beloit area. Because of the limited number of high capacity lines into Wisconsin from northern Illinois, the reliability of each is important to maintaining service and allowing for consistent access to the lowest cost power supplies.
Until recently, the existing line carried a single circuit 345-kilovolt line. The poles, however, are built to accommodate two circuits. The addition of a second circuit in spring 2005 strengthens the reliability of the electric systems and adds a much needed line into Wisconsin.
At a glance
Communities affected: Town of Beloit, Wis., and towns of Harrison, Burrett, Shirland in Winnebago County, Ill. The benefits of this projects reach far beyond the project area into Rockford, Ill. and the Janesville/Beloit areas and beyond.
Length of line: Approximately 15 miles (4 in Wis. and 11 in Ill.) on existing right-of-way on existing poles.
End points: Paddock Substation and Wempletown Substation
Voltage: 345-kilovolts
Status of project: Completed in spring 2005
Cost: $5.7 million
