The 60-year old poles and wires on the existing 138-kilovolt electric transmission line between the Saukville Substation and the St. Lawrence Substation (located northeast of Slinger in the town of Hartford) are no longer adequate to reliably move electricity through the area. In addition, this 19-mile corridor needs upgrading to support the additional output from the Port Washington Generating Station when the second unit is placed in service in 2008.
The existing wooden H-frame poles have deteriorated due to age. In addition, the use of a heaver-weight wire to carry more electricity will require the use of stronger structures. In general, the new structures will be located in the same position as the existing structures. However, there are some areas where the long distances between structures may require additional structures. Since several structures near St. Joseph’s Hospital in West Bend were replaced in recent years, they will not be replaced as part of this project. The voltage of the line will not change.
