Overview

This transmission line, which was placed in service in spring 2007, improves electric transmission to the communities in and around Madison's east side. This 4-mile, 138-kilovolt line connects the Sprecher Substation, located near the Sprecher Rd / CTH BB intersection, with the Femrite Substation, located on Femrite Road near the I-90 / USH 12/18 interchange.

The Femrite to Sprecher line addresses growing local demands for electricity projected by Madison Gas& Electric Co., Alliant Energy, and Sun Prairie Water and Light Commission. It also helps to strengthen the reliability of the transmission system serving the east side of Madison and neighboring communities. This line completes an electrical path around the city, providing an alternate path for electricity to flow in the event of an outage on another line. It also improves electric system import capability and reliability for the area and is one in a series of projects to reinforce the electric system in Dane County.  Along with another transmission line upgrade on Dane County's north side which connects the North Madison Substation, west of DeForest to the Columbia Substation, located near Portage. Both lines are necessary to deliver power from the Riverside Energy Center, a 600-megawatt generation facility in Beloit, Wis.
