This line and related substation work is part of the Rock River - Elkhorn conversion project, which will convert the existing 69-kilolvot system serving portions of Rock and Walworth counties from 69-kilovolts to 138 kilovolts. The growth in the area has increased the strain on the existing electric transmission system, which was not designed to accommodate the growing electric consumption. This West Darien to SW Delavan project, approved by the Public Service Commission in 2004, connects the substation in Darien to a new Alliant-owned substation southwest of Delavan. The line is operating at 69-kV until 2009 when all of the related work on the system is expected to be completed.  View map (158k pdf)

The new single circuit structures are weathering steel or galvanized steel. The span lengths (distance between poles) of the structures vary from approximately 300 feet to 700 feet. During construction, the new poles were erected next to the existing poles, which were later removed.
