Project need

When a local utility adds a new substation to an area to meet increased demand for electricity, it is necessary for the substation to be connected to a transmission line. This connection allows the utility to reliably deliver electricity to its local distribution system.

Electric usage in the Oregon, Wisconsin, area has experience significant growth in recent years. New development planned for the west side of Oregon, along with a proposed 230-acre commercial/industrial park near the Oregon/Fitchburg border and the expansion of Highway 14 south of Oregon, will lead to increased electric consumption.  With this growth, the electric system in the area will reach full capacity and lacks backup capability in case of an outage.  The rural area west of Oregon will become increasingly vulnerable to low voltages as Oregon and Verona develop and use the electrical resources from existing substations in those communities.

Project description

Alliant Energy (Wisconsin Power & Light) has proposed a new substation, called Sun Valley, in the vicinity of Fish Hatchery Road and County Hwy. CC in the town of Oregon. The Sun Valley Substation would be fed from an existing 69-kilovolt transmission line located along Adams Road, approximately three miles north of the proposed substation site. Several possible routes for a new transmission line running south from Adams Road to the substation site are being considered, including a route along Fish Hatchery Road where an existing distribution line exists.

69-kV with distribution underbuild.

69-kV without underbuild.
