What’s new in our transmission portfolio?
The Public Service Commission of Wisconsin conducted a lightly attended public hearing on the Paddock-Rockdale project – a proposed, 345-kV electric transmission line between the towns of Beloit and Christiana in south central Wisconsin that would provide our customers with access to a wider choice of low-cost generation and renewable energy in the region. The 35-mile line is the first proposal to be made that is justified primarily on economic savings, although it will improve reliability as well. If approved by the PSC, construction could begin later this year, with the line placed in service by mid-2010.
Despite the snow and cold weather, construction is on track in Vilas County on the Cranberry-Conover project. Poles are being set and wires are being pulled on the 16-mile, 138-kV line between Eagle River and Conover. As the spring thaw approaches, however, construction work may be suspended for several weeks due to weight restrictions on local roads. The project remains on schedule to meet its June 2008 in-service date.

We recently met with officials from The Ridges Sanctuary i n Door County to present them a $10,000 check for the organization’s capital campaign. The sanctuary was founded in 1937 to protect about 1,600 acres of wild, unspoiled land near Bailey’s Harbor, on the Lake Michigan side of the Door Peninsula. Much of sanctuary is made up of a series of low, sandy ridges, alternating with wet areas called swales. The ridges run parallel to the shoreline and extend about a mile inland.

Right: Ed Pentecost and Steve Leonard, representatives of The Ridges Sanctuary, accept our donation from David Hovde, local relations representative, right, on the steps of the 1869 Baileys Harbor range light.

We are participating in the fourth annual Wisconsin Renewable Energy Summit in Milwaukee this month. Noting the potential for up to 35,000 jobs over the next 10 years, the theme for the summit this year is “Green Jobs – Growing Wisconsin’s Economy.”
Our representatives will discuss the need for transmission lines to deliver renewable energy, which is often sited in remote locations, to the population centers where the wind, solar, biomass or hydro generation is needed and consumed. So far, we have completed transmission interconnections for more than 170 megawatts of wind energy in Fond du Lac, Calumet and Dodge counties – that’s enough to light about 76,000 homes!
