Walter Woelfle joined American Transmission Co. on Aug. 1, 2000, as vice president of Legal and corporate secretary. He oversees all operational legal, real estate and state regulatory matters relating to ATC, including selection and retention of outside counsel. Additionally, as secretary of the company, Woelfle is responsible for matters relating to the governance of ATC as a legal entity, interactions with the board of directors, and compliance and regulatory matters associated with ATC's status as a legal entity.
Prior to joining ATC, Woelfle served as counsel and secretary of the Nuclear Management Co. in Hudson, Wis., where he directed all legal and corporate governance issues. NMC was formed by four Upper Midwest utilities in 1999 to operate seven nuclear units located at five plant sites in Wisconsin, Minnesota and Iowa.
Woelfle also has more than 23 years legal and regulatory experience with Wisconsin Electric, where he held a variety of positions and responsibilities. He was involved in environmental matters, including enforcement proceedings, utility rate cases both in Wisconsin and at the Federal Regulatory Commission, power plant and transmission line licensing, mergers with other utilities, major asset acquisitions, and fuel and transportation contracts.
Earlier in his career, Woelfle worked as staff counsel for the New York Public Service Commission, as a nuclear safety engineer for Ebasco Services and as an electrical engineer for American Electric Power Service Corp. in New York City.
Woelfle earned a bachelor's degree in electrical engineering from City College of New York in 1969 and a law degree from Fordham University School of Law in 1973.
