John C. Procario assumed the position of president and chief executive officer of American Transmission Co. in April 2009 after a long and distinguished career with Duke Energy and its predecessor, Cinergy.
In his 32 years with Cinergy/Duke Energy, he held leadership roles in electric system operations, bulk power resource management, planning and technical services, finishing his career there as senior vice president and chief operating officer of regulated businesses. After leaving Duke in 2006, Procario formed his own consulting firm. His clients included investor-owned utilities, public power utilities and utility regulators.
An active industry participant, Procario has served on the North American Electric Reliability Corporation Engineering Committee, the Electric Power Research Institute’s Electric Systems Division Committee and the Executive Committee of the former reliability organization, ECAR. He also played a leadership role in the formation of the Midwest ISO in the late 1990s.
Procario, who holds bachelor’s and master’s degrees in electrical engineering from The Ohio State University has been a part-time college professor at the University of Cincinnati. He developed several power engineering courses and has taught more than 100 classes in electrical engineering. He also chairs the University of Cincinnati College of Engineering Advisory Council.
Procario is ATC’s second president and chief executive officer, succeeding former CEO José M. Delgado.
